Good experience with CSM

I got my CSM certification through Scrum Alliance a while back, and just renewed again. The process was as smooth as last time, which is good. I appreciate the consistency. They make it easy to keep up with my certifications, and the resources they offer are actually useful for staying current. It's why I keep coming back.

CSPO certification process was smooth

I decided to get my CSPO certification recently. The website was easy to navigate to find a training provider. I registered for a class, and after completing it, the certification process with Scrum Alliance was pretty quick. I just had to make sure my trainer submitted everything, and then I could download my certificate from my dashboard. Had a question about SEUs for future renewal and their support page was helpful without needing to contact them directly. Everything was laid out clearly, which I appreciated. No hidden steps or anything complicated.

I just renewed my membership. It was super straightforward, no issues at all. Took maybe 5 minutes tops. Glad to keep access to all the resources. Simple and quick.

I heard something about microcredentials. Are those like mini-certifications or what?

A Andre 1 month ago
Yeah, they're smaller, more focused badges basically. Like for specific skills within agile or scrum, not full certs.

K Kate Foster 1 month ago
Microcredentials are like bite-sized certifications for very specific skills, like facilitation or product discovery. They're not the same as the main CSM/CSPO certs, but they add to your profile and show expertise in a particular area. They're newer, but seem useful for showing focused skills.

Is there a student discount for any of the certifications? I'm still in college and budget is tight.

M Marcus 2 months ago
I think some training providers offer student rates, but Scrum Alliance itself doesn't have a blanket student discount code directly for initial certifications. You'd have to ask the specific course provider.

Occasionally, you might find a training organization that has a student or non-profit discount, but it's not a standard Scrum Alliance thing. Worth asking the trainer though!

Hey, wondering if anyone knows about discounts for CSM certs? I'm looking to take one soon and trying to save some cash.

R Raj Foster 2 months ago
Usually, the training providers themselves offer early bird or group discounts, not really Scrum Alliance directly for the initial certs. So check the specific class you're looking at.

Yeah, what she said. I got 15% off my CSPO by signing up like a month in advance with the training company. Scrum Alliance itself rarely has coupon codes from what I've seen.

How long do these certifications last? Do I have to re-certify every year or something?

C Chris Nguyen 2 months ago
Most of them are good for two years. Then you need to renew and get some SEUs.
1
A Andre 2 months ago
It's every two years for most, CSM and CSPO included. You gotta earn Scrum Education Units (SEUs) to renew, basically showing you're still learning and involved in the community. It's not too hard to get them, just attend some events or read books.

Is the CSM exam online? Or do I have to go somewhere to take it?

M Mia 1 month ago
Yup, totally online. You can take it from home or wherever, whenever you're ready after the course.

A Amber Carter 1 month ago
It's online, proctored though. I did mine a few months back. Just make sure you have a stable internet connection.

Can I use a corporate training discount if my company is paying for multiple people to get certified?

K Kevin Marsh 1 month ago
For sure. Most training providers for Scrum Alliance certs offer group discounts if you have several people signing up from the same company.

P Paula Okafor 1 month ago
Yeah, definitely ask about it. My old company sent five of us for A-CSM and got a decent group rate. It's usually handled by the training organization, not directly by Scrum Alliance.

What's the deal with SEUs? How do you even get those for renewal?

T Tara Lindqvist 1 month ago
You get them by doing things like attending Global Scrum Gatherings, watching webinars, reading books, or even mentoring others in Scrum.
6
S Shane Torres 1 month ago
SEUs are Scrum Education Units. It's basically points you earn to show you're still engaged with Scrum. You can get them from a ton of stuff: attending conferences, participating in local user groups, even just watching relevant videos or reading books. They have a whole list on their site, pretty easy to rack up enough for renewal.

I'm looking at either Scrum Alliance or Scrum.org for a cert. What's the main difference people feel? Is one better?

P Priya 1 month ago
Scrum Alliance is more hands-on training focused, and you get the cert after the class + a relatively easy exam. Scrum.org is more about the exam itself being tougher and demonstrating knowledge.
2
W Wendy 1 month ago
I've done both. Scrum Alliance generally has more 'community' feel, and the classes are usually longer. Scrum.org is often seen as more rigorous in terms of exam difficulty. Depends on what you prefer – structured learning with an instructor or more self-study and a harder test.
